STUDENTS CAN HAVE (A MASSIVE) INFLUENCE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA

9-year-old Martha Payne has shocked British society with her blog: NEVER SECONDS http://neverseconds.blogspot.co.uk/ where she denounces the poor quality food they're fed at school every day. Social media DO REALLY HAVE AN IMPACT on society and everyone can be responsible for denouncing (or praising) whatever worries you. The digital generation have a powerful tool in their hands and it's up to teacher to show them how to use them for good causes. Governments are starting to tremble... and I'm happy about it! I BELIEVE IN THE DIGITAL GENERATION! CONGRATULATIONS, MARTHA!

What about a wiki?
It’s another good option. If you feel comfortable with wikis, it’s great! Virtual Learning Environments are like textbooks: there’s no perfect textbook, but you feel more comfortable with a particular publisher. If it fits your needs and your students needs, go ahead!

I've been thinking about doing this for a long time, what about families and images from our students? 17:41

Right, it’s something to take into consideration. In our school we ask for parental permission TO PUBLISH STUDENTS PHOTOS AND PUBLISH DIGITAL MATERIALS THEY PRODUCE when they sign the registration form in June/July. If a family doesn’t allow it, so this kid doesn’t appear in digital publications that can be seen from outside the school (e.g Blogger) We must respect people’s rights, of course.

how are the students supposed to do the videos, with their mobile phones? 17:41

I love this question, Elisa: most kids own a powerful mobile phone with video camera, why don’t we use it in our ELT class? They love using it, and saves money buying video cameras!!! Digital Cameras also record decent quality videos. My suggestion: if you can afford it, buy a FLIPCAM http://support.theflip.com/en-us/home , cheap, REALLY EASY TO USE-BELIEVE ME-, and with a very simple software to edit and share your videos. You can get a Flipcam at www.fnac.es
Ipods and Ipads are excellent as well, but more expensive.

HOW TO SURVIVE THE DIGITAL JUNGLE

Enjoy this presentation of a 2010 seminar I gave in Barcelona. It's focused on Digital Textbooks, but it also gives general advice on using ICT in your ELT class.
A lot of interesting websites are recommended.
